The Flash Foxy Women’s Climbing Festival will be held in Chattanooga October 12-14, 2018
…I finally realized that my inner discomfort is rooted in a feeling of not-belonging. The problem is that we live in a society dominated by whiteness, and I will always be othered because I am not white.
Many comments from other hikers—even something seemingly innocuous like “You’re doing a great job!”—are meant to be supportive and encouraging, but they don’t always come off that way. These comments are, sometimes indirectly, about our bodies.
We're back with five Women of Color speaking about our experiences within the skydiving community.
The news of Tamir Rice’s death was a shock to many around the country. To others, the consequences of being Black in the United States is a narrative that has shaped the conversations and identity of many individuals and families in America.
Sometimes falling in love with your passion can easily happen, by just taking a simple vacation. This is how Chelsea Griffie fell in love with climbing. She decided to spend three months in Brazil, where she ended up climbing at Pao de Acucar, “The Sugarloaf.” Pao de Acucar primarily consists of sport and traditional climbing
We are a coalition of social media influencers – bloggers, athletes, activists, and entrepreneurs – who share the goal of promoting diversity in outdoor spaces where people of color, LGBTQ+, and other diverse identities have historically been underrepresented. We are passionate about promoting equity and access to the outdoors for all, that includes being body positive and celebrating people of all skill levels and abilities.
The Outdoor CEO Diversity Pledge pairs leading outdoor brands in one-on-one relationships with inclusion advocates to advance representation for people of color across the industry.
Over 200k followers on Instagram
6 successful outdoor diversity & inclusion blogs
6 monthly climbing/hiking meetups in 6 major cities (Chicago, New York, Bay Area, DMV, Portland, Seattle)
3 annual climbing festivals
Members of the Diversify Outdoors coalition work hard to address representation, access and cultural identity within outdoor industry and conservation. At heart, we’re storytellers, tapping into the American tradition of building community around stewardship and enjoyment of green spaces. If you spend time outdoors then you know just how important it is to protect and safeguard our public lands. The U.S. is 38% minority and well on its way to becoming a minority majority country in 2044. However, out of the 292.8 million visitors to national parks in 2014 only 22% were minority. Similarly, people of color and other diverse identities have long been underrepresented in the outdoors industry and its advertising campaigns, despite our undeniable purchasing power.
Our goal is to disrupt traditional narratives of who is active in the outdoors in favor of more inclusive, richer snapshots of outdoor recreation in the US. Let’s tell the entire story. Let's celebrate all the colors, genders, body types, and communities enjoying the outdoors. All are welcome in our movement; check out our page on Allyship to see how you can get involved. Donate to coalition member organizations, post an internship, or even write your favorite brands to ask them to diversify their brand ambassadors and marketing efforts.
We’re stoked about the amazing #DiversifyOutdoors organizations working hard every day to increase representation for women, people of color, LGBTQIA, body positivity, and diverse communities in our outdoors spaces. Want to learn more? Check out our Get Connected page or just keep scrolling.
